Topic: The importance of literacy in young children.
Host: @Lucasitos_Mommy
Last Thursday night, Oct. 25, we had an amazing and engaged chat on our weekly Sverve Twitter party. The chat was all buzzing with amazing ideas and wonderful activities regarding the importance of literacy in young children. I am a mom and an early childhood education major so this topic is near and dear to me. I believe in starting our children young when it comes to introducing early literacy skills. Parents are key and the number one role models for their children. Early literacy starts at home and it’s highly important for parents and children to engage in daily simple activities that welcome early literacy skills for long-term benefits.
Incorporating literacy at home is an effective way to begin those early reading days. Our personal favorite at home is having read alouds every night before bed. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a good book with your child and it’s amazing for quality bonding time between parent and child. Here’s what other moms had to say about ways to incorporate literacy at home:
@Petersterri tweeted: We read at every opportunity and let them see US read. Lead by example. #MySverve
@GratefulHoops_2 tweeted: Reading together, playing reading games and apps, making up songs about words #MySverve
Reading programs either in your community, a local library, or your child’s school is another great way to incorporate literacy in young children. Here’s what one mom had to say about taking her child to the library:
@Techtembo888 tweeted: Currently just the library, where older kids read to the younger ones! #MySverve
Of course, we can’t forget about those memories we’ve had growing up where we loved reading for pleasure. My personal favorite reading memory was reading my summer list and receiving a certificate of recognition for reading all my books. It was quite exciting! Here’s what moms said about their reading memories:
@Petersterri tweeted: I remember my mom reading chapter books with me and now I am working through Harry Potter with my son. #MySverve
@Tinaoglesby2 tweeted: Joining the summer reading program when I was little- love reading some of those books to my three #MySverve
It was quite a fun and interesting chat! Really enjoyed the chat and loved seeing everyone so engaged with the information, thoughts, and ideas. We had three Starbucks card winners: @petersterri, @Kaisband, and @GratefulHoops_2.
Catch us again next week for another fun Sverve Twitter party! Every Thursday night at 9:30 pm EST. See you there!
